A short account behind the founding of Ayr as a Royal Burgh in 1205. This booklet gives details on the background of Ayr as a burgh and the location of a new castle. There is a facsimile of the burgh charter, as well as a translation of the charter by Dauvit Broun. The booklet is illustrated with maps depicting the extent of Ayr and its trading liberties at the time, as well as of Ayr around 1220. Professor Geoffrey Barrow is Professor Emeritus at the University of Edinburgh. He is the author of many works on mediaeval Scottish history, and a life member of the AANHS.
